Village History

History

The hamlet hit the headlines in the early 1860s through “The Glascoed Riots”. About 20 percent of the men from the locality were hauled off to the Monmouthshire assizes, to be tried for rioting! Which side were your ancestors on?

Read Glyndwr Williams’ wonderful Mount Zion Chapel history – one of the finest sources of oral history that you’ll find on Glascoed, going back to the early 19th century!

There are stories on Law and Order, memories of the village School, and the upheaval that the construction of the Reservoir brought in the mid-20th century.

A little known fact: Did you know that there’s an ancient site of Scientific Interest in the hamlet?- if not, then read about Cwm Ton Site of Special Scientific Interest!

The Glascoed Riots.

Read all about the enclosure riots that caused Glascoed to ferment and explode in the early 1860s!

The Reservoir

Did you know that in the 1960s a significant portion of Glascoed disappeared underneath what is now known as Llandegfedd Reservoir. Read more to find out about what happened and the effects it had on the people of Glascoed.

Glascoed School

Glascoed had a village school from the 1870s to 1980s. Read more about life at the school from some of the many pupils who attended over the years.

CHRISTIANITY (I called it Religion on the PowerPoint but it’s Christianity on the Website). Let’s keep the title as CHRISTIANITY (instead of Religion).

Christianity

What do we know about Glascoed in the nineteenth century? We’ve got evidence from a range of written records, newspaper stories, some oral history, gravestones, trade directories and photographs. Quite a bit of the information though comes from chapels and churches. Read about the Churches and Chapel that have been at the centre of the community for so many.

Royal Ordnance Factory, Glascoed

Glascoed has a Royal Ordnance Factory, that has been the hamlet’s employer largest employer since the late 1930s. Find out more about its history and some of the stories of people who worked there – including wartime tales!

Cwm Ton Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSI)

This Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) is an outcrop of rocks that runs on either side of Glascoed Lane, from Ton farm (near St. Michael’s church, Glascoed) to Cwm farm.

The site is a geological feature that is a rarity in the UK and of particular interest to geologists.
